It has to be one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind. It rocks us to sleep, consoles us when we’re sad, announces our kings, rousts our patriotic pride, wings us through endless hours of work, connects us with eternity, and bridges every gulf between generations, races, and cultures. Music! What a wonderful gift.
Music gives a grown man permission to cry, and a mother’s song will dry the tears from a frightened little boy’s eyes. Music can compel a man to risk his life for a cause that words alone could never inspire – for nothing summons courage quite like a song. Music!
Music supplies what the mind cannot express and its harmonies weave heart, soul, body, and spirit all together. Music makes the clumsiest of bumpkins an expert in love and renders effusive young ladies speechless. Ah, music! What a gift.
Music is not afraid of the dark or storms or war. Music drives fear far, far away. And the fellow who has a song is never really alone. Music! A bit of heaven sent our way to comfort and cheer us on this journey that sometimes gets weary and long. Music. What a gift!
You can tell a whole lot about people by listening to their music. Their songs reveal their joys, their anguish, their dreams, their values.
One thing that Americans have conquered is our ability to express ourselves through music. Our history is filled with glorious songs that celebrate our freedom, express our devotion to God, honor those who have died defending us, and complement our favorite pastimes. Through the good times and bad, Americans have always been determined to move forward and leave the world a little better than they found it. It is impossible to overestimate the role that music played in helping us do just that.
We could talk a long time about how important music is to us, but as President Ronald Reagan said, “Life is one grand, sweet song so start the music!” So, find your favorite tunes and let the magic begin.
Music. What a glorious gift!
