Well, I get to the end of the list and discover that I have not one book left, but two. I guess I should have called the list My Top Six.
Actually, these two books are related. One calls for a lifestyle of commitment and giving, while the second is the story of one who is doing just that.
David Platt is a baptist pastor from Alabama. For the past several years, he has led the charge to rethink faith and commitment and how they are lived in our western culture.
Platt’s message does not resound from our Pentecostal pulpits. Most of us are more aligned with the prosperity gospel than we are with the Great Commission – even though the protests come roaring from our brand-new cars as we drive from the golf course to our 4,000 square foot homes. (I believe Radical is the message that will keep our young people living for God, but that’s a message for next week). However, the call is biblical and Platt delivers it well.
Kisses From Katie is the story of a young woman who is following the call of her heart and is impacting hundreds of lives in Africa. Every young person, both male and female, needs to read her story. Parents need to read it, too, so they will remember that God gave them children to train for His purpose: not to push into the molds they designed for their kids.
These two books will stay with you for a long time. I highly recommend them, but be prepared to do a lot of soul searching and self examination.
